Opening Weekend Artist Talk: Rachel Milne
Join local Newcastle artist Rachel Milne and writer Laura Jackel in conversation exploring Newcastle’s ever-evolving urban landscape and the enduring reference to beauty in the everyday in Milne’s work. A short introduction will be provided by Newcastle Art Gallery’s Exhibitions Coordinator James Collis.

Rachel Milne
‘RACHEL MILNE: Nest’ is the first major solo exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery by local artist Rachel Milne. Milne produces intimate paintings and portraits set in her home and studio, as well as plein air landscapes of iconic places in Newcastle laden with social history. The exhibition also includes recently created works of art by Milne on display for the first time. Milne was awarded winner of the Singleton Portraiture Prize in 2013, has been a finalist in the Kilgour Prize at Newcastle Art Gallery in 2014, 2016 and 2018, as well as the prestigious Wynne Prize in 2017 and 2018 at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Laura Jackel
Originally from Crawley in the UK, Laura Jackel is a published writer and academic tutor at The University of Newcastle. She is a regular freelance contributor for Mamamia, Domain and Nine.com.au and she is co-host and founder of the Oversubscribed Podcast. Laura has had articles published by Sunday Life, Selector, Façon, Swell and Hunter Lifestyle Magazines and The Newcastle Herald. Laura is a passionate reader and volunteer board member of the Newcastle Writers Festival. She has two boys aged 10 and four and thus a love of coffee and long solo walks on the beach.
