THE ROARING 20s takes us back in time to the art and fashion of the 1920s – a decade that witnessed advancements in technologies, the end of a global pandemic, increased freedoms for women, and social upheaval as men returned from war. The 1920s also observed the arrival of art deco and modernism to the Australian art scene, as well as the creation of the first major art prize for Australian art – the Archibald Prize.

This exhibition is an opportunity to compare the style and subject matter of artists working in the 1920s to the contemporary figurative works of Australian artists today on display in the KILGOUR PRIZE 2020.

THE ROARING 20s features works of art drawn exclusively from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection by artists including Rupert Bunny, Jack Noel Kilgour, George W Lambert, Lionel Lindsay, Hilda Rix Nicholas, Thea Proctor and James Quinn.
