About the artist
Michelle Napanangka Earl, from
Kilipiynpiyn Workshops, is a local artist and basket weaver. As a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties Michelle has a personal connection to the Hunter and respectfully teaches and celebrates the traditional Aboriginal culture of the communities that reside across the valley. The knowledge and skills that Michelle shares has been passed down for thousands of years, “it is, as it always has been." Michelle is a descendant of an ancient culture that rejoices it's visual and oral history. Our land, our people, our spiritual world is connected by our Elders passing their knowledge, skills and stories onto both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples so that it is not forgotten and therefore pass into the mists of history.

Teens Masterclass Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book my 12 year old into the workshops?

When we are thinking up a new idea for a workshop, we base it on what an 14 or 15 year old could reasonably do, and then we make sure the activity can be easily simplified or made more complex depending on the age of the participants. If you are confident your twelve year old would enjoy the 1.5hour experience, then this is fine.

Do I need to supply any materials for my teen to participate in the workshops?
The Gallery supplies all the necessary materials for your teen to participate in the workshops. Occasionally we may have one off workshops where teenagers are required to bring in something from home; however, you will be notified of this upon booking.

Can my teen participate in the workshops if they have individual requirements?
Absolutely, all of the Gallery's programs are inclusive and accessible. We want to work closely with parents and caregivers to make it the best possible experience for the participant, so it’s a good idea to call us to book so we can talk about your teen's individual requirements or workshop adjustments. If your teen would be more comfortable or supported, you or a carer are also welcome to stay for the workshop to assist them.

Do I need to book my teen in advance or can I just show up on the day?
Bookings are required in advance. Please note, our workshops book out very fast; to ensure you secure the workshop session you will need to book as soon as you can online. Please visit the external website booking provider 'trybookings' and the direct link we have provided on the workshop page.

How do I know if I have booked a workshop session?
You will be directed to visit the external website 'trybookings' to make payment and secure the workshop session. Once this has been completed you will receive an email from via 'trybookings' confirming the workshop session, date and time.

Do I need to arrive early for the workshop?
The workshops start on time, so we advise you arrive 5-10 minutes early for your teen to get set up before the workshop begins. Parking can be difficult in the CBD so be sure to allow sufficient time. Free 1/2 hour parking is available in front of the Gallery.

Do I need to stay with my teen for the workshop?
You do not need to stay with your teen during the workshop. Our Gallery Educators are very experienced and do a great job at running the workshops. You can take the opportunity to have an hour to wander around the exhibitions; grab a coffee nearby or shop on Darby St, alternatively you are welcome to stay nearby and watch things happening.

Will there be photos taken at the workshops?
We do generally have a photographer capturing all of the excitement during our workshops. You will be asked upon booking if you give permission for your teen to be photographed. If you do not approve photography, we will make sure no photos of your teen are taken on the day. These photographs will often be used on our website or in a flyer to promote future workshops - but if you prefer your teen not to be photographed that can be easily accommodated.

Do I need to pack food and drinks for my teen?
We have a very strict food and drinks policy in the Gallery, so we advise you eat before you come. We have water available for the participants throughout the workshop to avoid teens losing their special drink bottles.

Can I get an exchange or refund if I can't make it on the day?
Exchange or refund of a ticket can be available up to 48 hours prior to your booked workshop. For information about this, please contact the "Event Organiser". We strive to keep our workshops affordable for participants, please be aware that last minute cancellations and refunds cannot be accommodated.
To the extent permitted by law, the $0.50 cent booking fee paid by you to TryBooking will not be refunded in any circumstances (including where the ticket price has been refunded by the Event Organiser).
