Frequently Asked Questions about Transport
Parking for the event:
Make sure you leave enough time to find a park.
The best bet is to pay for a park at a nearby parking station, catch a taxi/uber service, or organise your trip using public transport. There will be limited on-street parking.
Will there be on-street parking?
Free, on-street and unmetered parking (after 5pm) is available in the immediate Cooks Hill area, however, we expect crowds to the event will impact on availability of parking. Many of these zones have free one hour or two hour parking until 5pm, so arriving early may result in a highly coveted, nearby car park. The Queen Street Car Park (accessible via Darby Street, at the rear of the Gallery building) is metered parking until 5pm and will also be available, but probably only for the early birds.
What about parking stations nearby?
The CIVIC WEST CAR PARK on Gibson Street is only a few minutes walk from the gallery, has 470 spaces and a 'night owl' option, which is a $3 flat rate for parking after 5pm and departing before 8am the following day, visit their website for more details.
The MALL PARKING STATION on King Street closes at 7pm, visit the City of Newcastle website for more details.
What public transport is in operation?
Find more information about public transport in Newcastle by visiting the Newcastle Transport website, or calling the Transport info line on 131 500. Stops for various bus routes operate on Hunter Street, King Street and Darby Street. The Newcastle Interchange in Wickham is the closest train station to Newcastle Art Gallery. In the east end, bus stops have moved to accomodate the Supercars, so contact the info line for up to date information.
Did you also know that any state government bus is free in the city centre between 7.30am and 6pm seven days a week? The State Transit Authority (Newcastle Buses) fare free zone extends from Selma Street in the west; north to the Tree of Knowledge corner (Hannell Street, Wickham) and east to the beaches. The zone loops south into Darby Street, along Bull Street and then back to King Street. Normal fares apply outside the specified hours and/or beyond the zone. Opal Customers travelling within the boundaries of the Fare Free Zone are not required to tap on and tap off.
Where's a good drop-off point/pick up point for Taxis and Uber?
The nearest taxi ranks to Newcastle Art Gallery are on Darby Street (out the front of the Delany Hotel, closest cross street: Darby Street and Council Street) and at Civic Station Bus Interchange (438 Hunter Street). Slightly further afield, you can also find a taxi rank in Honeysuckle (near The Dockyard, 3 Honeysuckle Way).
If you're getting dropped off by Taxi or an Uber then just keep in mind that Laman Street will be closed to traffic and is pedestrian access only. If you're not familiar with the area, you could drop a pin on the corner of Queen Street and Dawson Street, the corner of Laman Street and Auckland Street, or the corner of Dary Street and Queen Street, for example.
