The Street Hoarding Artist Commissions is open to all Australians (citizens of Australia or residents for at least twelve months) who are 18 years and older.
Employees of City of Newcastle, Newcastle Art Gallery, the judges and members of their immediate families are ineligible to apply.
Any works of art submitted with an application should be the artist's original work, and should not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party.
Artist may only submit one application.
Expressions of interest will be reviewed and selected by a panel comprising Newcastle Art Gallery staff and subject matter experts. The panel's decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The panel reserves the right not to select any work.
Expressions of interest must contain all required information and attachments to be eligible for consideration, without exception.
Expressions of interest entries and payment must be submitted by midnight, 11:59pm (AEST), Sunday 19 February 2023. Applications are processed with a time and date stamp defined at the point of submission - this time and date must be before the deadline described to be eligible for consideration. After the deadline, the online application form will not be accessible from our website.
All personal information gathered will be used solely for the purpose of conducting the assessment of the expression of interest. Artist biographies will be reviewed with the successful artists prior to any public announcement of the successful Street Hoarding Artist Commissions. Your expression of interest documentation will be retained on file.
Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email. Unfortunately due to the volume of applications we are unable to provide specific feedback about individual applications.
Successful artists will be notified in late February 2023. Artists will be required to complete a digital confirmation form indicating their acceptance.
The Gallery reserves exclusive rights to formally announce the successful artists. Artists must keep information about their selection confidential until the Gallery's formal announcement, which will be indicated in writing to the successful artists.
The period for the development new work spans March and early April 2023.
The timeframe for the display of your work will be discussed with you as part of your notification of your successful application.
Some design support will be provided for all successful artists in the final stages of print preparation.
Please ensure that you tick 'yes' if you will require more substantial design support to translate your work into a digital format. This might include digital manipulation of a photograph of your work, as one example.
An artist agreement will be provided to the successful artists noting additional terms and conditions specific to these commissions
This is a non-acquisitive commission. However, all works produced for the commission are to be new works specifically for this process.
The Art Gallery Street Hoarding Commissions will be in the public domain. All care will be taken to maintain the printed works of art and the hoarding, however, as this hoarding surrounds an active construction site, there may, from time to time be requirements to adjust the initial display of the work to allow for the staged development of the Art Gallery Expansion Project by the construction company. Any such changes will be indicate in writing and the artist will be notified in advance.
