About the artists:

Bravo Victor is a local Newcastle based bass and voice duo comprising of bassist Jonathon Burgess and vocalist Sophie Aked. Bravo Victor’s sound could be described as a ‘melting pot’ of these genres’ harmonic language and performance practices. Through their strengths and passions, Sophie’s for poetry and melody and Jono’s for the intricate inner workings of harmony, complex and striking original music has been created.

Miss Vanilla Bean and the Domestic Appliance Orchestra is a performance poem written by artist Helen Hopcroft. The poem dramatizes mental fragmentation created by household duties which undermines the concentration required to make great art and build a sustainable creative career. The main character, Miss Vanilla Bean, finds herself constantly interrupted – either by children, family, friends or her own anxiety - whenever she sits down to begin creative work. The performance is informed by Freddie Mercury’s iconic 80s music video, 'I Want to Break Free'.

It was first performed by Helen at the opening of the Reimagining the Canon exhibition at the University of Newcastle and has since been included in the Mad Bitches Inc. cabaret show with New York trained actor Lou Chapman in the lead role. Reimaging the Canon was curated by Dr Annemarie Murland and included a number of important female artists, including Rachel Milne.
