INTRODUCING some of the newest faces and figures to join the Newcastle Art Gallery collection. This exhibition presents a range of approaches to figurative and portrait representation in a diverse display of different styles, scale and media.

Featured are figures in landscape, figures in motion, figures in two dimensions and hauntingly hyper realistic faces. Fast and gestural marks bring to life the family group in Carlos Barrios’ Hanging Around 2015 and Ben Quilty’s pub mates in the Maggots Series 2011, while collaged layers help to build the narrative in photographic works of art by George Schwarz.

Different aspects of the figure in landscape are explored in John R Walker’s immense Self portrait in a paddock 2008. Rodney Pople’s Botany Bay 2018 alludes to World War I and the Light Horse Brigade and Paul Ryan references colonial history reimagined in Colonial Picnic. Tea and Pudding 2016.

INTRODUCING is an exhibition with something for everyone, drawn from the Gallery collection to complement the KILGOUR PRIZE 2019.
