John Peart (1945 - 2013) was an outstanding artist, winning the 1997 Wynne Prize and the 2000 Sulman Prize, and gained a reputation as one of Australia's great modernists. Drawing on Newcastle's own holdings, this exhibition pays homage to John Peart, featuring 18 works across a range of media, including paper, paintings, collage and tapestry from the period 1968 – 2002. The exhibition showcases the diversity of his practice and Newcastle Art Gallery's ongoing commitment to collecting and celebrating the careers of artists over successive decades. A highlight of this exhibition is the newly acquired tapestry Figures and Grounds from 1988, donated from Orica Limited, Melbourne in 2014.
