Young creatives call out for badge designs

A project presented by the Newcastle Art Gallery Youth Reference Group

The Youth Reference Group is looking for design submissions from young creatives, to develop a badge or series of badges for sale in the Gallery Shop. To enter a submission, you need only be living in Australia and between 13 - 30 years of age.

There is no set theme for the badge - however it should promote or reference Newcastle Art Gallery in some way. Designs will be reviewed by the Youth Reference Group and the top designs will be developed into embroidered badges and sold in the Newcastle Art Gallery Shop.

This project is designed so the end product will promote Newcastle Art Gallery to a younger audience, but the call-out for submissions will also provide professional experiences and opportunities for young people.

Newcastle Art Gallery will support the successful designer or designers by covering all costs associated with manufacturing the embroidered badges, and the designers will receive a commission for each unit sold, plus a bunch of badges to place in their portfolio, add to their CV, or just to give to friends and family.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: Saturday 30 June 2018

Points to remember when designing your badge:

  • The manufacturing costs will impact on the success of the design - so keep in mind a simple shape will cheaper per unit. (Think oval, circle or rectangle rather than, for example, a Christmas tree)
  • Any detail or lettering on the finished embroidered badge, must be no smaller than 5mm high, so if you want to design a small badge - keep it simple
  • Colour gradient options are limited with embroidery - we recommend looking at embroidered badges, either online or in person, to gain inspiration and understand the design constraints.

Interested? Then get started on your designs and send us your submission via the form below

You can upload any kind of file, for example it may be a photograph or scan of your hand-drawn design, or a PDF of a digitally-drawn file.
