Winners and finalists from each age category have been announced!
There were over 300 entries in the Young Archie Newcastle competition: 44% in the 5-8 year category, 48% in 9-12 year, 6% in 13-15 year and 2% in 16-18 year. All submitted by Hunter-based budding artists between the ages of 5 to 18.
Five finalists from each age category are displayed at Newcastle Art Gallery held in conjunction with the Archibald Prize 2017 regional tour. See online display of winners and finalists, as well as artworks receiving a mention for highly commended.
The competition was judged by the Director of Newcastle Art Gallery, Lauretta Morton and the guest judge - artist Peter Gardiner, winner of Kilgour Prize in 2016.

How the entry process works
Please download and print out the entry form, and include it with your work for submission. The completed entry form and original artwork MUST be posted or hand-delivered to Newcastle Art Gallery, before 15 April 2018.
Download the Young Archie Competition Form (one form per entry). There is no fee for entry.

General questions about the Young Archie Competition
Can I enter a self-portrait?
Do I have to know the person personally, and do they have to know me?
Yes. We specify that the portrait should be of a person who is special to you – someone who is known to you and who knows you and plays a significant role in your life. So if you paint your best friend as if they were a superhero, that would be eligible, but a portrait of a superhero would not. A portrait of someone you knew who has since died is eligible too.
Can I enter more than once?
No. You can only submit one entry and one artwork. If you are submitting a personal entry, you cannot submit one as part of a class entry, or vice versa.
Do I have to enter a painting?
No. You can use any material you like including paint, pencil, oil pastel, crayon and collage, as long as the artwork is dry, has no sharp edges, is two dimensional and doesn’t sit higher than 1cm above the surface of the paper. We recommend using good-quality paper (NOT board) so it can be mounted for display if you are a finalist. Please exclude using glitter or loose materials.
Can I use a canvas board or similar material, rather than paper?
No. For the Young Archie exhibition, we must display the artwork in a set kind of frame mounted by our conservators. This is one of the reasons we have restrictions on both size and material, and specify works need to be between A4 and A3 and on paper. Your artwork must be no smaller than A4 (210 x 297 mm) and no bigger than A3 (420 x 297 mm) and no thicker than 1cm. It can be vertical or horizontal. Your artwork should be clearly labelled on the back with which way it should be displayed, along with your name, age, address and contact details. Make sure this doesn't show through to the front.
How do I enter?
Download, print and complete the entry form, which includes a brief statement (less than 100 words) telling us who you have chosen to depict and why. This form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Your artwork should be sent flat, not folded or rolled. We suggest you place it between two pieces of cardboard to protect it. If you wish your artwork returned after the competition, please also enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope of the correct size. Families submitting artwork for more than one child must enclose one envelope per artwork due to the way that entries are processed.

How do I get my artwork returned?
If an artwork is to be returned you must indicate this on the entry form, and enclose a suitable stamped self-addressed envelope with the entry. Families or schools submitting artwork for more than one child must enclose one envelope per artwork due to the way that entries are processed. You CANNOT opt to pick up the artwork in person.
Other than artworks submitted with a suitable, stamped, self-addressed return envelope, after Sunday 24 June 2018 the Gallery may destroy or otherwise dispose of any entry (including those of finalists and winners) in any manner it deems fit and shall be under no liability whatsoever to the entrant in respect of the artwork so destroyed or disposed of.
How many finalists are displayed in the exhibition?
A minimum of five finalists from each category will be exhibited at Newcastle Art Gallery and online on the Gallery's website. One winner will be chosen in each category. Artworks that received an honourable mention are displayed on the Gallery website.
The theme is a portrait of a person who is special to the entrant, who is known to the entrant and who plays a significant role in their life. Entries to Newcastle Art Gallery's Young Archie competition will be judged by artist and inaugural Kilgour Prize winner Nicholas Harding and Newcastle Art Gallery Manager Lauretta Morton, according to the following criteria: the relevance of the submitted artwork to the theme, as decided by the judges; artistic interpretation of the theme, as decided by the judges; originality of the submission. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Other terms and conditions
Entry is open to all permanent residents of Australia born during the eligibility period. The artwork submitted must be the original work of the entrant themselves. Artworks that are deemed to not belong to or be created by the entrant will NOT be eligible. Employees and their immediate families of the Art Gallery of NSW and Newcastle Art Gallery and their agencies and companies associated with the promotion are ineligible to enter the competition. Immediate family means any of the following: child, stepchild, grandchild, niece, nephew, sibling, stepsibling or first cousin.
Newcastle Art Gallery can take no responsibility for any loss or damage to an artwork entry while in its custody or in transit.
Prizes cannot be transferred. Gift cards will be given to a parent or guardian, who may be asked to sign the card. Non-cash prizes cannot be redeemed for cash. In the event that for any reason whatsoever a finalist/winner does not take an element of the prize at the time stipulated by Newcastle Art Gallery then that element of the prize will be forfeited by the finalist/winner and cash will not be awarded in lieu of that element of the prize.
Newcastle Art Gallery shall endeavour to contact the finalists by phone or email within two weeks of the prize judging. In the event that a finalist/winner cannot be contacted by Saturday 12 May, 5pm, the prize will be forfeited by that entrant.
Licensing the artwork
Entrants (including winners, finalists and highly commended entrants) grant the Art Gallery of NSW and Newcastle Art Gallery non-exclusive rights to reproduce their artwork in material form, to photograph, publish and/or communicate it to the public for the following competition-related purposes, and anything incidental to such purposes. Where reasonable, the Art Gallery of NSW and Newcastle Art Gallery will attribute the artists as the author of the work and reproduce the work in full. Details of the work may be used at the the Art Gallery of NSW and Newcastle Art Gallery’s discretion. Entrants (including winners, finalists and highly commended entrants) will not be entitled to any fee for such use.
Questions about the entry form
I made a mistake or want to change information on my form. What should I do?
Do NOT submit another (corrected) entry. Just write the changes you would like to make, ensure you enclose your contact details and email us here. We’ll adjust our records during the processing of the entry.
Questions about artwork delivery and return
Where do I go if I want to deliver my artwork in person?
Go to the Gallery front desk during opening hours before the cut-off date.
How do I know that Newcastle Art Gallery received my artwork?
Newcastle Art Gallery will send an email to all entrants when their entry has been successfully processed. Please ensure you provide your email address on the entry form. If you'd like to check on the status of your entry you can call us on 02 4974 5100 or email us here.
When will you return my artwork?
After the competition has been judged and the finalists announced.
If you are one of the finalists or highly commended entrants, we will organise the return of your artwork with you directly. If you have not been selected, your artwork will be handled as you indicated on your form.
If you enclosed a stamped, self-addressed envelope, we will mail your artwork. Due to the large number of entries, this may take several weeks. If you have changed your mind about the return of your artwork, email us here with your details, including your phone number, and we will try to assist.
Can I pick up my artwork in person?
No. Due to the large number of entries, it is not possible for Newcastle Art Gallery to safely store artworks and make them available on demand.
