THE ERSKINE PLEDGE: a gift to Newcastle
3 November 2018 - 28 January 2019
10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, 7 days during school holidays
Free Exhibition
This exhibition celebrates the overwhelming generosity of James and Jacqui Erskine, several private donors and the Gallery’s support groups - the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation, Society and Guides.
Sydney based philanthropist James Erskine is not a Novocastrian, his connection to Newcastle’s Art Gallery commenced as a private lender to the JOHN OLSEN: The City’s Son exhibition in 2016. Having first established a relationship through an exhibition, this significant benefactor has continued his support of the Gallery by pledging in 2017 that he would match the value of $250,000 to the Gallery’s collection if the Foundation raised the same amount either through the donation of funds or works of art.
In early 2018 the challenge was successfully met and this exhibition is testament to the generosity of all donors. It highlights how working together can further advance the significance of Newcastle Art Gallery and the city’s collection.
THE ERSKINE PLEDGE: a gift to Newcastle showcases works of art by artists Earle Backen, Hatton Beck, Yosl Bergner, Charles Blackman, David Boyd, Lucy Boyd-Beck, Judy Cassab, Ray Crooke, Shay Docking, Donald Friend, Tom Gleghorn, Gali Yalkarriwuy Gurruwiwi, Steven Harvey, Nora Heysen, Linde Ivimey, Louis James, Chris Langlois, Bernard Leach, Keith Looby, Elwyn Lynn, Brett McMahon, Margaret Olley, Hubert Pareroultja, William Peascod, Lloyd Rees, Rae Richards, David Rosetzky, Peter Sharp, Wendy Sharpe, Shigeo Shiga, Jack Carington Smith, Joshua Smith, Ken Unsworth, Dick Watkins, Karl Wiebke, John Wolseley and Salvatore Zofrea.
