Anne Ferran has been a leading figure in photo-media since the 1980s and has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

With images that explore the residues of Australia and New Zealand’s colonial histories, Ferran is also drawn to the gaps or silences in the records and personal histories of those incarcerated in hospitals, mental asylums, prisons and workhouses.

While her early works reflect a feminist aesthetic and philosophy in the 1980s, Ferran’s focus then shifted to Australia’s colonial past and its effects on the present through utilising museum collections, archives and archaeological sites in Australia and abroad.

Shadow Land features recent works including Box of Birds 2013 and the artist book Prison Library 2014. The exhibition is also accompanied by a publication, produced by Power Publications at the University of Sydney.

Ferran’s work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, George Eastman House (Rochester, NY), National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, amongst others.

Shadowland is presented in association with the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery and Australian Centre for Photography Sydney.
