We have developed this poster for teachers to give them a head start to 2018 and prepare for Gallery visits. Featured are four exciting exhibitions to engage students of any age with works of art.
YOUNG ARCHIE COMPETITION - now open for entries
Hunter-based young artists between the ages of 5 - 18 are invited to submit an entry to the YOUNG ARCHIE competition.
Finalists from four age groups will be displayed alongside the ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2017. The portrait should be of a person who is special to the artist - someone who is known to them and plays a significant role in their life.
Entries are free, and must be received before 15 April 2018.

Extend your program and lessons with connections to the collection
Nationally recognised as one of the finest public collections in Australia, Newcastle Art Gallery holds over 6,300 works of art and the quality and breadth of its collection makes it a significant cultural and educational asset. We would love to hear about your program, your student's needs, and talk about how we could incorporate works from the collection into your student's learning. Students studying Drama or Music could create performances inspired by a work in our collection, Visual Art students could curate exhibitions or learn more about the live of an artist and English or History students could use works as evidence or inspiration for essays, critiques or creative writing.

Through out the year, we host several different events specifically for teachers and educators. Here is some more information about the two main types of events. Visit the Event Calendar for more information about upcoming events.
Held for selected exhibitions. Free, bookings required.
Throughout the year selected exhibitions are targeted with an education focus. Members of the Audience Team develop programs and resources to complement these shows. To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, teachers are invited to the Gallery for refreshments, to mingle with fellow colleagues and to hear speakers describe the educational opportunities that are on offer. These events are a great way to catch up with colleages and gather resources.
Professional development through workshops and events

The Gallery regularly coordinates artist-led workshops and demonstrations which provide teachers with constant opportunities to expand their knowledge. We invite local, national and at times even international artists to present these one-off special events, which can last from a couple of hours to a whole day, and provide valuable insight into an artist's professional practice.
