Internationally renowed Alister Spence Trio in concert 12 September at Newcastle Art Gallery

02 Sep 2015

Novocastrians will be treated to a unique musical experience Saturday 12 September when jazz composer and pianist Alister Spence and the Alister Spence Trio bring their distinctive sound to Newcastle Art Gallery.

Celebrating the third anniversary of the Gallery's Stuart & Sons piano, the concert features contemporary music from the Trio described by Spence himself as “exploring beauty, energy, interplay and the connections between composition and improvisation."
Art Gallery Manager Lauretta Morton said, “We are delighted to have Alister Spence playing the Stuart and Sons piano in the Gallery. It’s a world-class instrument that befits one of Australia’s most original and distinctive jazz pianists."

In recent years Spence has devoted his energy to writing and performing with the Trio, described as one of the most spellbinding acts in Australian improvised music, having gained worldwide recognition for their ingenious compositions and magnetic live interplay – using piano, bass, drums and glockenspiel.

Spence’s wide-ranging talents have led him to work for some of the world’s most respected contemporary musicians across stage and screen, and he features on more than 30 CDs, many of which have either won or been nominated for Australian Record Industry (ARIA) Awards.
